How to find it
To get there from the Elko bridge climb the Wigwam flats road (gated but open June 15-July 15) Follow the road up then down to flats across the canyon from the sawmill. Follow the road up into trees to a road on your left blocked by a ditch. Push your bike up through the grass to the right of the ditch and you'll find an overgrown road that switchbacks up. Follow this. At the third switchback the downtrail comes in from the right. Go up the trail OR follow the road one more switchback to a road that branches right (orange flagging) Follow this road up through larch forest to some open grasslands. At the second opening watch to your right for flagging tape and rock cairns. This is the downtrail. Continue up the road shortly, watching to your left for slashpiles and a firepit. This is the Rim, the reason for the trail! Branch off the road and follow the cliff edge across then up to some cool lookout points. The trail ends just past a point where a rideable rock section has split away from the wall. Don't worry there's a 2X10 at the other end!
After taking in the view follow the rim back down to the road then turn left at the downtrail.
The trail
This trail hugs the edge of the huge cliffs above the 3rd Silver Springs Lake. It's a pretty cruisy downhill from the top, but there are some "airy" sections right along the edge. After the rim section it flows down through open grasslands with some rock drops. This section can be hard to follow so watch for orange flagging and rock piles. Then it drops into open forests with some cool gully features. The total vert is about 1000 feet back to the Wigwam road. For more photos check out the forums under New Elko Trail
When the Wigwam road is closed it can take over 2 hours so bring lots of water and spare tubes for the rocky road.
Enjoy!
