New Elko Trail

The "Bighorn Rim" trail rolls along the huge cliffs above the 3rd Silver Springs Lake. The views from the rim are amazing as the trail hugs the cliff edge over 500 feet above the lake! The whole trail is rideable, but still needs work. Biker traffic is especially needed so come check it out. It takes up to 2 hours round trip and it's pretty dry so bring plenty of water! (and patchkit/tube) Watch for orange flagging.
To get there cross the river at Elko and ride up the gated road to the right after the bridge. Climb the big hill then roll down to open flats across from the sawmill. The road enters trees and you'll see a steep road to the left with a ditch across it. Climb through the grass up to the right of the ditch and follow an overgrown road that heads right then switchbacks up. For the thirsty dog there's a spring that crosses the main road just past this junction. Near the 3rd switchback the down trail joins from the right. Climb further and turn right at a road into larch forest. Follow this road up to open grasslands where the downtrail is to the right marked by rock cairns. At the second opening a rock bluff crosses the road. To your right is the downtrail marked by flagging and rock cairns. Remember this when coming down! Continue up shortly and keep an eye left for small slashpiles and a firepit. This is the Rim. Branch off the road and follow the rim to the right where it gradually steepens. Good views along the way! Near the top a section of rock has split away from the main wall. A conveniently placed 2X10 completes the "Elko skinny". Follow the rim a little further to the final lookout. Take in the view then rip the trail the way you came back to the firepit. Head down the road (or beside)then turn left at the rockbluff. Follow cairns and flagging and watch for rock airs! The road is to the right but the trail swings hard left towards a treed dip. Pedal across a bouldery ridge along a big fallen tree then straight over open rolls. Then the trail swings right into trees and becomes more obvious. Join the swichbacking uproad and haul! From here the bottom section isn't done but tree biking's more fun anyway!
Hope you find it, Enjoy!

New trail in Elko

Just rode that trail but I thought that it was called the Silver Springs Rim Trail. Am I mistaken. None the less. If you get a chance, it's a freakin' blast. Combine it with the Wigwam Flats ride and it makes for a great Sunday. Yes it does. Go ride this one, It's sweeeeet!

Great ride

Rode it today, with snow coming down. The views were amazing. Loved the down, what a great trail.

How do I attach images? I wanted to attach the GPS map for others to see..

add your trail to the trails directory

look for "trail listing" in the create content menu in the left column when you are logged in.

No Puddles

I went up to "Bighorn Rim" today to buff up some sections. Saw 2 Rams at the top along the cliff edge. After yesterdays rain the trail is pretty much the definition of tacky with no muddy spots at all. I added some more photos to the main post so have a look.
Watch for Horses too!

Hey Doug, sorry about the

Hey Doug, sorry about the confusion. You guys found the old route. My original plan was to make it a loop by following the road past the slashpiles (just like you did) then hanging a left through the trees to the high lookout. Then down the rim. After riding it a couple times though I just started branching off the road at the slashpiles/firepit and riding up the Rim. This way you can check out the views and the different lookout points on the way up. Then just ride the trail back down the way you came to the road.

So I guess there are 2 options from the slashpiles.

You can branch off the road at the slashpiles and follow the rim up. Then ride back down the way you came.
Or keep climbing the road and watch for a trail heading left into the trees to the lookout (watch for blue flagging)

I prefer going up the rim, but either way make sure you bring your camera!

Hope I didn't just make it more confusing!

great trail

Good job Trevor! Pat and I did this trail today and had a great time.
We were a little confused by your flagging. No problem following the old road up, it's a nice ridable grunt. We got to the slash piles and saw the orange ribbons following the rim. We continued up the double track till it started dropping. This didn't seem logical so we turned around. We went back till we spotted some blue ribbon on the right (rim side of the road) We followed it a ways but soon lost the trail so we doubled back to the old double track. We went back to the slash piles. We then followed your orange ribbons along the rim. When we got to your last ribbon at a great lookout point, we checked the gps and saw we were only about 100 metres from the blue ribbons we started following. We headed in that direction and found a trail through the bush marked by blue ribbons. we're not really sure that this was your intended route or not, but anyway we blocked the old road with some brush and built some cairns along the blue ribbon route to the rim.

The ride down along the rim is great. The views are spectacular. The downhill single track is excellent and had a great flow, I especially liked the way you used that gully for a kinda half pipe action.

Great job Trevor! Everybody get out there and check this one out. It's a great spring ride, destined to become an epic!

I submitted a blog entry with 2 GPS maps of the ride attached.

Keep up the fine work my south country friend!!!

Thanks. Gonna go give it a

Thanks. Gonna go give it a try very shortly.
