BP or biking?

smallnocbm.jpeg

So, BP has started its exploration and drilling program for their mist mountain coalbed methane project which spans 500 sq/km of wilderness south and east of Fernie. Their project area covers some trails, access roads and future potential biking areas.

BP is going to FRAC in Fernie. Find out what that means for our people, our water and our wildlife.

Coal Discovery upgrade completed

The Coal Disco trail work is now finished. There now is 9 kms of uninterrupted single track including 3 new bridges. Materials, steel stringers and cedar decking were flown in by Bighorn Helicopters 2 weeks ago.

This section of trail will be used on day 1 of the 2010 Transrockies. This is 100% classic x-county riding.

From Fernie start on the Old Stumpy Trail and take a right at the yellow coal discovery trail sign. Keep following the yellow signs most junctions are marked. About 6 km out there the new section takes off to the right ( this junction is not signed yet, if you miss it and you hit the powerline, turn around and back track a couple hundred meters ) The new single track ends on the Ridgemont road 9km from town. Check it out!

Thanks to the volunteers and all the riders that supported our Spring Bike Blitz it was a huge success. Was great to watch all the young children participate in the bike ride around town. Click on the Fernie Mountain Bike Club Facebook site for more pictures.

Build a Pedestrian Bridge over Fairy Creek - End the Thompson Incest Cult!

IMG_0099.JPG

For anyone who has attempted to cross the Fairy Creek Bridge heading out to ride Swine Flu and the other Procter mountain trails, or to get to Dicken Road and the Chamber of Commerce. You know that it is a death trap. No raised sidewalk, and oncoming traffic coming around a blind corner.

Many residents who live out Dicken Road way, especially those with children, have been writing to government encouraging them to build a pedestrian crossing on the westbound side of this bridge.

This has fallen on deaf ears.

The families have even went as far as building their own makeshift underpass to try to create a safe option for crossing this bridge.

Write to - Kareen.Peters@gov.bc.ca and cityhall@fernie.ca and ask them to build a bridge for pedestrians before someone gets hurt!

Totally missing everything

Hello folks. New to Fernie scene but been riding for years. Great trails. I met a lot of very nice people, both on the trails and around town at the various shops. All glad to help out the new guy.

I'd hoped to do more riding than I did but things got in the way like work, my daughter's wedding, etc. Any shut down at the mine translated into me jumping in my car (with my bike) and heading west to Cumberland,BC (where I actually live) to kiss my wife. I'd also hoped to do some racing but I was away for the whole toonie series and seems every upcoming event falls on a work day :( Looks like a great time. Btw, If you are heading to Vancouver Island, be sure to take your bike and check out the vast network of trails in Cumberland. Lots of XC and DH.
